Hello. This Rally for Ricky campaign is for my sister's husband, Ricky Nixon. He is in a fight for his life against stage 4 colorectal cancer. My sister, Leah Nixon, and he have been married for over 23 years. It has been said that "To know Ricky is to love him". He is an amazing husband, father, son, paw paw, brother, uncle and friend. He has a big heart and a great sense of humor. He is very talented and has always been a very hard worker.
Ricky and Leah have big hearts and would give the shirt off of their backs if necessary to anyone who needed it. They have had a series of hardships recently. In 2015 Leah had to stop working due to her health and other family issues. She has been a dedicated and hard worker her entire adult life but is now facing several health issues of her own. Ricky continued to work to provide for his family but he began to struggle with his health as well. He was on temporary disability due to his back and neck and needed surgery. In November 2017 they lost their home because of the financial hardships they were experiencing. This was the home in which they had lived together for over 18 years. It had been in Leah's family for generations. They tried to make the best out of a tough situation and moved in with Leah's elderly step-father just in time to celebrate Thanksgiving. However, the family suffered another devastating loss when her step-father died unexpectedly of cancer in January 2018.
The hard times were not letting up. Ricky's health continued to decline rapidly. Despite seeking answers from many doctors, several emergency room visits and frequent hospital admissions, they could not figure out what was causing his problems. That was until June 2nd of this year when Ricky sadly received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. He had to undergo emergency surgery to help the blockage. He and Leah began the daunting journey of meeting with oncologists, scheduling testing and several follow up appointments. In the midst of all of this he had to have surgery on his foot before he could even undergo the scans to stage his cancer. On June 19th they were told that Ricky had stage 4 cancer and that the cancer has spread to his liver with multiple lesions. The doctors gave Ricky a very bleak prognosis of 4 months without treatment or 8 months to a year with treatment.
He is undergoing radiation and oral chemo 5 days a week. Tomorrow he will start on his 4th week of what is expected to be a 6 week treatment plan. They are hoping to shrink the main tumor enough to send him to Dallas to have it removed. He will also need to have chemotherapy intravenously at the end of this course of radiation in hopes of shrinking the lesions on his liver. They have been told to expect that this will make him very ill. He is already very physically weak and in a tremendous amount of pain.
Ricky and Leah are not the type of people to ask for sympathy or charity. However, I can't sit by and let them suffer through this without a strong support system in place. Leah and Ricky have a solid faith in the Lord and are staying strong for each other and their family. They have 3 beautiful grandchildren who want to see their Paw Paw healthy again and we still believe in miracles.
Ricky and Leah need help now more than ever spiritually, emotionally, physically and financially. We all realistically know that cancer can be financially devastating for families. I would like to help ease this burden for Ricky and Leah as the expenses are already starting to be overwhelming. They should be able to focus on getting Ricky the treatment he needs without the financial burden looming overhead.
We first of all want to say how much we appreciate everyone who has shown support for Ricky and Leah in anyway. The visits, the phone calls, and comments on Facebook have all really helped them to stay encouraged. I want to ask that if there are any prayer warriors reading this to please pray for Ricky and Leah. It is absolutely not fair that they have to go through this at all. I am hoping that if you feel that tug at your heart for Ricky and Leah you will prayerfully consider making a financial donation as well. I am heartbroken for them as I know many of you are. Let us continually lift Ricky and Leah up as well as their family. I pray that we can all come together and show them a massive amount of support. May God bless them and shine His light on this darkest time. Ricky is in the fight for his life as he tries to beat this disease that has tried to invade his precious body. Let us help him fight. Let us Rally for Ricky.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
