Dyke Soccer is a 200+ strong community of amateur athletes that meet twice a week for free pickup soccer games in local gyms and parks. With few dyke bars left in this godforsaken world, @dykesoccer divines pop-up pickups that encourage queer cruising, promote physical and mental health, and provide a network for queers to find each other in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and beyond.
We advocate for prison abolition, health care for all, senior citizen outreach, and queer media. Some of our projects include: hosting skill trainings for amateur queer soccer players, coaching queer players on injury after-care and warm-ups, and hosting a fundraiser game for Black+Pink (an organization that serves as a pen pal system for LGBTQI+ folx behind bars). As part of our recent participation in the Global Goals World Cup, Dyke Soccer was featured in Broadly.VOYEURS + PLAYERS:
Are you a soccer jock looking to play? Follow/DM us at @dykesoccer on Instagram and we’ll add you to our Google Group! SUGAR MOMMIES:
Are you a company looking to support a group of creatives that are using athletics to promote radical change? Get in touch ;)HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE?
We understand that many are unable to contribute any amount -- the primary purpose of this fundraiser is to cover all expenses without requesting money from our players on a regular basis, which can be alienating for those unable to contribute financially and challenging for those who personally take on the financial/administrative burden. That said, here are a few ways to help you decide how much you could give to keep Dyke Soccer thriving:FOR VETERAN PLAYERS:
If we meet our goal, we'd be able to host approximately 50 FREE PICKUPS with our budget. Assuming 20 people attend each event, overhead per person is approximately $5-10 per event. To put it simply, if you come to half of the Dyke Soccer events in 2019, your personal overhead is $125-250. If you plan to come to all of the events, your personal overhead is $250-500. If everyone on our mailing list gave $50, we would make our goal. If you give $100, you'd be covering yourself as well as a teammate. Want to set up a membership? A recurring payment of $50/month gets you: 4 games per month with a paid coach, 1 conditioning per month, 1 sauna twice a year. FOR NOVICES + VOYEURS:
New to Dyke Soccer? Never played but want to support? Give what feels good. We DEEPLY appreciate every penny that you can share to nurture this unique space. You’ll be welcome at all of our events and we encourage you to send your queer friends -- let them know it’s “on you” ;)
NOTE: We aren't offering individual prizes because the ULTIMATE PRIZE is a cost-free, queer-inclusive community-based activist project that improves mental and physical health. We give all of the administrative/captaining/fundraising/bookkeeping labor of this project for free, and we’re excited to be creating a queer-inclusive fitness community within the typically heteronormative culture of athletics.WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR?
Below are our specific financial goals, depending on how much we are able to raise. For all paid leadership/work opportunities, we will prioritize hiring trans/gnc/nb people and people of color. All of the opportunities below will be open to all, regardless of whether you contribute $$$ or not. All financials are trackable on a transparent view-only google sheet, and all money will be held in an independent bank account. BABY BOTTOM BUDGET: TIER 1 = $3,850
$200 a night for indoor field x 12 nights (spring + fall/winter). We currently rent from Park Slope United (max capacity 40 players) = $2400
$50 a night for outdoor field x 25 nights (May - October) = $1250
Promotional materials (business cards, flyers, posters) for recruiting in the local neighborhood (BedStuy) and in LA (our newest team). We need to continue to promote Dyke Soccer beyond our social network = $200ASPIRATIONAL DAYDREAMER BUDGET: TIER 2 = $7,500
$50 per pickup so that we can pay a coach to help us (May-October). Many of us are novices to the sport and need to learn basic training = $1250
$200 once per month to pay a coach and/or personal trainer to help us with strength training and conditioning. Many of us would like the opportunity to build strength and fitness in a queer-inclusive space. This would prevent injury (many of us do not have health insurance) = $2400FANCY FANTASY BUDGET: TIER 3 = $9050
$150 to hire photographers for documentation of our team x 5 photographers = $750
Twice yearly rental of a mobile sauna for queer-inclusive bathing rituals post-game = $800Are you looking to be a TIER 4 BENEFACTOR?
+$5,000 would pay for 3 day weekend tournament/retreat for 50 players (this assumes $100 per person. If costs exceed this amount, we will implement a pay-what-you can to supplement).
+$10,000 would send 10 of us to the Women's World Cup.
+$20,000 would buy uniforms for the entire 200 person mailing list.
+$1,000,000 would allow us to open up a queer retreat space of our very own, complete with free soccer clinics for queer youth, a gender-neutral sauna, and indoor/outdoor playing spaces.
