Hi my name is Darren. Several years ago, the company I was working for closed and I was forced to take a job as a low-wage, front-line health care worker to make ends meet. During the COVID-19 pandemic I felt a great responsibility to the patients I was serving and suspended my search for a higher paying job, despite being a single father. I wanted to show my children that work is about more than a paycheck. It's about honor and dedication to those who need our help. On Wednesday, March 2nd I discovered my car was stolen from outside my work. This was a devastating moment! Without a car it takes me more than 2 hours to get to work by bus, because of the early hour I start my shift. It also makes it near impossible to visit my children, who live with their mother, more than 20 miles away. Friends, I have never asked for help like this in my life, but this is a desperate time for my children and me. We are very close, and they have already not seen me in a week. I moved to the US in 2012 from S. Africa and became a citizen in 2021. I have no family in the US, only my friends who have become my family. I am trying to raise $2,500 in the next 14 days to purchase a reliable vehicle that will allow me to regularly visit my children and get back and forth to work.
