Hello, my name is Marcia Johnson. On January 30, 2016 I woke up at 3:00 a.m. from a dream about how beautiful the night was and how brightly the stars were shining down on me. I opened my eyes to see my cement driveway and my car’s rear tire next to me. I was horrified to see that I was, in fact, laying down on the driveway in a puddle of blood with the left side of my head smashed into the cement, my left hand was bloody and swollen, and my right hand was black and blue and aching. I laid there crying out and moaning in pain, hoping someone would help me but there were no sounds in my quiet, small-town street. I pulled myself up and went inside. I looked in the mirror and saw the terrifying sight of my face! My nose was broken and pushed to the right which explained the puddle of blood in my driveway. My left eyeball was pushed in and to the left. I grabbed my cell phone and called 911. I went to let my dog in and she backed up with a look of terror in her eyes, either at the sight of me, or something else she had seen? She was so scared I had to pull her into the house.
I am a divorced Mom of 2 and my girls were out of town on a trip with their Father. I decided to go out for a little while to a local restaurant. I left the restaurant at around 10:30 and drove the few blocks home. I went into the house and then remembered I had left my cell phone charger in the trunk. I knew my kids would be texting me about their trip so I wanted to charge my phone. My 21 year old special needs daughter has epilepsy and I was constantly worried about the possibility of her having a seizure while she was on vacation, especially without me to notice the signs of a seizure coming on. The last thing I remember was going out to my car. I believe either someone followed me home that night – or I caught someone perhaps breaking into my car – and they assaulted me.
I spent that night in the hospital under heavy pain medication and sedation to calm my hysteria. I couldn’t stop shivering from being out in the cold for so many hours. Two days later I was having surgery. I had a fractured bone in my cheek, my nose was broken, and I had bruises and scrapes on my face, hands, arms and chest. I was born with a cleft palate, cleft lip and deviated septum, and have had several surgeries on my face because of that, but I have never felt so much pain and have never been so traumatized in my life. My plastic surgeon and a policeman neighbor said they are certain that a simple fall could not have done that much damage to my face! The surgeon said I had been attacked. The police detectives investigated to try and figure out what happened that night but do not have enough evidence and have since closed the case. There were reports of car break-ins in my neighborhood the week prior to this as well and my children and I, and my family, are very scared for our safety. We are doing all we can to add more security to our home.
I still have no memory of what happened that night and it has left me with emotional and physical scars along with mounting hospital bills that my high-deductible insurance does not cover – approximately $7,000 at this point. I’m reaching out to my family, friends and anyone who might be able, to help me with these costs which I cannot afford. I would be forever grateful for any financial and spiritual support after this horrific event in my life. God bless you.
