Hi everyone, I hope you are doing well. If you've reached out with no response, I apologize, but things have been crazy. Never in a million years did I think I would be writing 1 of these for Nick. If y'all know him, y'all know he's all about health and fitness Honestly, if he wasn't so healthy, things could've turned out worse, but we are so grateful it did not
About 2 weeks ago Nick started complaining about his right leg hurting and, at first, we thought it was a muscle strain. His leg progressively got worse until it swelled last Monday, which led us to believe it was another blood clot. He already had a blood clot in his left leg 2 years ago. We luckily got an appt with the same doctor, who diagnosed him 2 years ago, on Tuesday, who rushed us for an ultra sound. The doctor explained that he had a bigger clot than 2 years ago and encouraged us to go to the ER to have them check his full body. We are so thankful we did because the CT scan and ultrasounds showed clots in both legs and both lungs.
Prognosis: DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) & Saddle Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism.
All the doctors were baffled that he did not have any breathing issues, which now we are realizing he did but they weren't that noticeable because he no longer heavy breaths when sitting. The doctors stated he should've been on oxygen because the clot was so big in his lungs. On Wednesday they did a "clot buster" surgery which involved going through his jugular to put 2 catheters into his lungs to pump 2 different types of very strong blood thinners into his lungs. They also placed a filter to prevent any of the clots from his legs going to his heart/lungs/brain. On Thursday morning they checked his back pressure and they were able to remove the catheters, but still kept him on the strong blood thinners via IV. We came home Friday evening.
He is still having issues walking far without being in immense pain and we are not sure how long it will take to heal. The doctor told him he will be on blood thinners for the rest of his life and strongly suggested a career change because of his high risk job. Any cuts or falls can be potentially fatal.
We are not sure when he can return to work and his medicine is $500 a month plus future doctors visits. Currently I cannot work until he can get around by himself, but I do plan to get a job once he can get around better. He works for a small company, so he does NOT have PTO, insurance or any benefits at all. We are also short on rent and bills because of the money we had to pay upfront for the doctor and ultrasound.
TLDR:
Nick's leg started hurting 2 weeks ago
We though it was a strain, ended up being a DVT.
Nick was in the hospital for a week. He was diagnosed with DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) 2 years ago in his right leg and now he has it in both legs and his lungs (Saddle Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism). He had a surgery to quickly break up the clots in his lungs. His job does not offer benefits. His medicine is $500 a month. We are already short on the mortgage and bills. We don't know when he can return back to work. He can't walk very far without pain, so I have to take care of him until he can get around without being in immense pain. I plan to get a job once he can get around by himself again.
We greatly appreciate all the love and support from our friends and family
thus far. We will greatly appreciate any help you can give us. The money will be used for his medicine, doctors visits, medical bills, mortgage and bills until we can both go back to work. Thank you! We love you all
Nick's loving and thankful partner,
Nia
