Help Loyce Stay in School!

Donation protected
My name is Loyce Gayo and I need your help to finish college. I am a 20 year old creative and activist from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by way of Houston, TX. I moved to Austin with the intent to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with B.A. in African & African Diaspora Studies in 2016. Being the child of an imigrant and a first generation college student makes graduating college a major milestone for me and everyone who made it possible for me to be here. Going to class is a constant reminder of the physical, financial and emotional sacrifices my family has made to ensure my success.

I am in need of $5000 to pay back a loan I owe to UT Austin. The university requires that I pay the loan back in full before the end of November in order to continue my education. Due to some unexpected financial hurdles, this semester I am no able to fund my tuition.

During my past five semesters at UT, as a member of UT Spiteshine Poetry Slam, I have competed at two national collegiate poetry competitions. In 2014, UT Spitshine Poetry Slam team won the collegiate national poetry slam, CUPSI, bringing the much needed diverse voices of UT tot he national stage and recognition to our school. On campus, I serve as president for two actvisit organizatinos - Hack the System, and Society for Cultural Unity. Hack the System, is student organization dedicated to tackling racism and sexism in STEM. Our mission is to capacitate actvist organizations, push a critical discourse  amongst students and tackle issues with in the Austin community. Society for Cultural Unity, is an archiving organization dedicated to using history to challenge the oppresive systems at UT. This year, SCU has staged demonstrations to speak out against the lack of diversity at UT. I have also made several achievements during my academic career. Earlier this year, I was awarded the prestigious Kuhn's Intellectual Entrepreneurship Award for my research, which I had the honor of presenting at the UT Africa Conference 2015 alongside other amazing scholars.

I would like to graduate from this university imbued with the strength of all who have pushed me this far and a plan to continue my creative and academic pursuits. Please help me finish the work I have started!
