THE MAN & HIS GAME:-

Richard Russell

Richard Russell’s game isn’t baseball. His lifelong expertise, the prowess which has brought world renowned recognition to our island Jamaica, has been on the tennis courts.

Born on September 8, 1945, nationally, he has achieved the highest rating of any Jamaican on the international tennis circuit; eg: the youngest National Champion at age 16, the only Jamaican to qualify and win matches at all Grand Slam Championships from 1964 - 1972. In 1966 he received the distinction of holding the record of winning a first-round match in a Grand Slam Event at the Australian Open Championships 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Richard has won over 12 matches in the Davis Cup Competition - including wins over Arthur Ashe and Charles Passarel in 1966 and Eric Vandillon in singles at the 1970 Davis Cup tie versus the West Indies. He also had a big win over the highly rated Dennis Ralston in 1972 at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico with the world-famous Arthur Ashe on a singles sideline.

Richard’s influence on the game in Jamaica has been indelible. A founding member of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), he has over decades has an impact on not just gaining worldwide acclamation for our country, but through training and mentoring our youth, he has in following his own father’s footsteps, ensured that the game of tennis remains on the forefront of Jamaica’s many sporting accomplishments.

From 1972-1995 Richard was the Director of tennis at Half Moon Club, Rose Hall, Montego Bay Jamaica. From 1974-1987 he was responsible for the running of 14 Easter Tennis Spectacular Events at Wyndham Rose Hall, Montego Bay. From 1970-1974 he brought world famous tennis notables such as Nastase, Borg, Connors, Gonzales and Segura to Jamaica for the Rothmans’ Tennis Tournaments. In 1990-1991 he created a Pro Celebrity event at Half Moon Club. In 2002-2003 he was the Circuit Chairman to Jamaica, hosting 2,000 plus world class Futures players, their coaches and family members from all over the world by creating and running 22 men’s professional tournaments in a record-breaking series of events which has never been attempted in the Caribbean.
Chairman/Director of the Russell Tennis Academy at Hillel Academy, Campion College and Campion Deep Dene. In 2011 he became Chairman of the All Island High Schools’ Tennis Championships and a Director of Tennis Jamaica. Richard has undoubtedly been a major conduit for three generations of tennis excellence in Jamaica.
He is the father of three sons who are also all involved in tennis.

THE CURVE BALL:-

Life’s unexplained challenges.
A fitness buff; vegetarian by choice; he swims regularly with his “Lonely Hearts Club” friends at Doctors Cave Beach in Montego Bay. The most optimistic and upbeat individual you could ever meet. Richard’s lifestyle has been the epitome of organic and wholesome healthy foods and consistent exercise throughout the years. With an an individual who exemplifies such a disciplined approach to his physical and mental well-being, how can we explain the unlikelihood of what happens next in his life?

Almost two years ago, Richard presented with swelling in his neck, which eventually led to hoarseness and discomfort, difficulty swallowing and the development of chronic severe headaches, neck pain, weakness and episodes of fainting due to blood pressure instability.
The road has been a long and difficult one.
After months of consultation with several specialists both in Jamaica and in Miami, Richard’s diagnosis of cancer of the tongue and left tonsil has been definitively confirmed as a primary cancer (separate and apart from his prostate cancer which was already known).
A treatment plan for a period of 6 –7 weeks was immediately implemented for concurrent chemoradiation therapy to be done in Montego Bay. This plan also recommended by his doctors in Miami, Richard has completed three weeks of treatment and all his specialists are extremely impressed with his progress. After completing this treatment, he will be treated for his prostate adenocarcinoma with radiotherapy followed by hormonal therapy.

The medical expenses involved have been astronomical. Without insurance, this has resulted in a severe depletion of funds and after completing 50% of these scheduled therapies, he finds himself unable to complete this cancer treatment plan without supplemental financial assistance.

His personal appeal follows:-

Dear Friends,

As many of you know I have been suffering with cancer for the last year and a half. During this time I have received medical treatment that has now culminated in a seven week program of both radiation and chemo therapies. This has resulted in a severe depletion of my funds and after completing 50 percent of these scheduled therapies I find myself unable to complete this cancer treatment plan without supplemental financial assistance.

As a result of my financial difficulties I have placed both of my Spring Farm properties for sale. The realization of these sales will not take place for several months thus I am forced to look elsewhere for additional finances.

I am requesting assistance from my friends, neighbors and well-wishers in the form of monetary assistance (specifically a loan) for which I am offering a return of principal, plus twenty percent for a period that I envision will not last longer than six to eight months.

I have been fortunate to receive pledges amounting to US$4,000 from a few friends to assist me during this difficult time, for which I am greatly appreciative.

Please assist me in the continuation of my cancer treatment program, by contributing whatever amount you can afford to, in these very stressful times of economic decline.

All good things,

Richard Russell

We are asking Richard’s associates, friends, and neighbors to assist in meeting the financial requirements to complete his cancer therapy. The mechanism to do this via the GoFundMe account (which is a recognized crowdfunding internet platform to raise funds) for which we are asking donations of any amount for this highly recognized icon of Jamaican sport.

It is anticipated that Richard's scheduled therapy treatments will be completed by January 2021 if we can raise enough funds by that time. The funds needed to complete his therapy is US$7,500.00. With your support we can certainly accomplish this.
