I'm 76 years old and have been making sculptural Raku vessels for over 45 years in my small studio in Marquette, Michigan. The building where my studio is has been sold, and the new owners are gutting the 140-year-old building and making a luxury hotel out of it. The new owners, investors from San Diego, originally said I could stay in the building, but that changed recently. I have to leave by at the latest November 1st. It's best that I leave ASAP because I need to keep producing and selling. I love what I do and would not dream of quitting. When I looked around for a new place, there are hardly any, and I can't afford what people are asking. The possibility of me becoming homeless is very real unless I get some help. I would like to move closer to lower Michigan or anywhere that I can have a small studio and a place to live. I have survived economic hard times, once during the housing bubble in 2007-2008 and once during Covid. Both times I ended up spending almost all my savings. I've managed to save money after Covid, but what I have is not nearly enough. I've never asked for help and am not comfortable doing it. I, in turn, have helped others along the way. When a friend's studio burnt down, I let them work in mine, and I've donated countless pieces to fundraising events. I've had people come up to me and tell me how much I influenced them to make art and how rich their lives are because of it. I could use an influx of cash, so I can move and a studio space. I once talked to someone who had a building they weren't using and let an artist use the space to live, work, and have a small gallery. That was in Sutton's Bay, MI. That's a great area to have a studio. In fact, everywhere on the Lake Michigan coast would be fantastic. I would be so grateful if I could find that. Anywhere in Michigan or the country would be great. Midland, Michigan would be great. Or, the Detroit area. I would be so appreciative and thankful. It could be anywhere in the US.
