Anamosa State Pen for CO McFarland & nurse Schulte
Donation protected
As a breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand what it is like to suddenly be faced with a life changing situation. My husband is also a Corrections Officer at the Anamosa State Penitentiary where the senseless murders occurred.
My husband is a CO at ASP and worked with Robert and Lorena. This hits home for all of us either working in the maximum security prison or loving someone that does. Many of our spouses have sat at the very desk Robert was manning on the tragic day. In fact, my husband was on the verge of bidding on that job and, having more seniority, he would have gotten it. I put myself in Sara’s (Robert’s wife) place and it is terrifying and heartbreaking. It really is too much to handle. I had to do something to help these families.
As the wife of a Corrections Officer, the mother of a Police Officer, and the sister of a Firefighter, I have heard all about Tunnel to Towers and often wondered what it would be like to go through a loss such as this. (Ironically our son works for the PD in Sioux City, IA which is where both of the inmates charged in this heinous crime were arrested for different incidents of armed robbery). I figured the least I could do would be to inquire about your program to see if you might be willing to help these families out.
It takes a special person to willingly go into a maximum security prison every day! Robert, Lorena, and all of the Corrections Officers, nurses, doctors, and other staff are truly heroes. They are there to not only keep the outside world safe from those inside the walls, but to take care of the inmates, counsel them, keep them safe from each other, and even work to teach them skills to use after they have served their sentences.
I have always worried about my husband’s safety at work. I could never have imagined what happened during this incident. What a reality check of how these men and women risk their lives every day in this thankless job!
Please give this request thorough consideration as a way to help the families and to honor the two lives lost on this tragic day. Thank you.
I will divide the funds evenly between both families. I will send them each a check upon closing of this page.
Sincerely,
Traci Walters
