As many of you know, Laurie went in for a total knee replacement on Tuesday for her right knee. The knee surgery was a success, but there has been complications. When she came out of the surgery more, she displayed signs that she had a stroke. It has been days of CT scans, MRI scan, neurological exams every few hours, and lots of pain and sleeplessness. On April 4th, the CT scan showed her swelling has worsened in her brain, from a 2mm shift to 5mm shift. It can negatively effect the brain when this happens. As a result, she is requiring brain surgery to remove a part of her skull to help relieve pressure from the swelling. This is a serious procedure with risks at stake. She will have this surgery at 5:30pm. At this moment, we can not see a definitive recovery period, but we have been told she would wear a helmet to protect her brain for 3-5months with a year to fully recover. With that being said, she and the family are going to struggle with finances because she is the big bread winner in the house They have a house being built to accommodate her family and her mother. She has her youngest daughter getting married in June. She has been a nurse since before I was even born and has cared for so many families in Pediatrics and Labor and Delivery.
