73 year old disabled woman transitioning to assisted living

Deborah McCahon is 73 years old, single, hearing-impaired, is losing what little vision she has due to macular degeneration, requires a wheelchair for mobility, and has extensive arthritis throughout her body. Deborah does not have any family members to help her as she enters these late years in her life. Deborah has had issues with her vision and her mobility for approximately 19 years. Her income while she was able to work was generally minimum wage positions meaning she made enough money to pay her bills, but not enough to save much additional money.

Deborah has not been able to work for the last 3.5 years, but has lived independently, paid all of her bills, including a mortgage with her limited income of approximately $ 1600 in social security benefits. Unfortunately, Deborah has reached the time in her life when she can no longer live independently because she is going totally blind. She needs to sell her home and move into a senior adult residential facility. She needs an environment where she can have interaction with other individuals and not be totally isolated in a house.

She needs to sell her house in Nashville, TN and use that money to help her relocate to a senior residential facility. She currently receives medicaid for her medical benefits, but will lose her medicaid when she sells her home due to the limits of $ 2000 of resources as outlined in medicaid rules. She wants to be able to live as independently as possible without being in a nursing home as she is not at the stage of needing full-time medical care. The lowest average cost of a senior living facility is around $ 2700 per month that is handicapped accessible and does not provide certain amenities like three meal a day or other assistance with maintenance of a unit. Deborah cannot afford to move into a facility without selling her house and cannot safely live alone in her house.

Her home requires rehab restoration services in order for her to be able to sell it and have enough money to move into a facility that can provide her with a safe living space, three meals a day, and emergency assistance if she needs help. Due to her inability to perform and afford continued maintenance services on the home, the home is in need of significant repairs in order to appeal to a buyer.

An estimate of $10,000 has been obtained to provide the needed improvement services for the home, but Deborah does not have the money in order to pay for these services. She has applied for a loan to help with removing unneeded items from the house and funds needed
to pay for her move to a residential facility. She has reached the maximum amount of funding she can receive through a loan.

As Deborah's friend, I am asking for funding from individuals who would be willing to donate to help her make this needed transition. If we could raise $10,000, Deborah could make the improvements needed to her home and hopefully get a decent sale price for the home. This would enable her to live in a place where she can be somewhat independent and yet have people and support that she needs in order to live safely.

Any amount would help, as she navigates this new stage in her life. Thank you!
