Fight Cancer: Do It For Debbie

My mom’s story:

Anyone that is fortunate enough to know Debbie Casey knows that she is one of the kindest, most selfless people you could ever meet. She has lived her entire life with the goal of spreading positivity to everyone around her. Her capacity for love, generosity, and understanding is truly unparalleled. Even if I dedicated every second of the rest of my life to describing the pure beauty and grace that my mother embodies, I wouldn’t come close to painting the full picture. Knowing the light that my mom brings to this world makes the struggle she now faces every day that much harder.

Our family was completely turned upside down on April 1st, 2014 when my mom was diagnosed with late Stage III Ovarian Cancer; an extremely aggressive type of cancer that had spread to her lungs, liver, GI tract, and lymph nodes. The doctor surgically removed almost all non-essential organs (her ovaries, her spleen, her uterus), and we embarked on our first 6-month journey with chemotherapy.

After 5 different lines of chemotherapy (each lasting about 6 months, with varying periods of remission or maintenance), her cancer has started aggressively growing again. With cancer treatment, the reason patients have to switch therapies is most commonly due to the malignant cells developing a resistance to the chemicals used. Unfortunately, my mom is getting to the point where very few options remain for us. We have funded her treatments with our family savings for as long as we could, but now we are reaching out to you to help us in any way you can.

Several weeks ago, my mom was deemed eligible for a new type of immunotherapy trial. We are extremely hopeful that this new treatment could have a positive effect on her condition; however, the trial is only offered at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas (1,082 miles from our hometown of Boone, North Carolina). Since my parents own their own business in Boone, moving to Texas temporarily is not a viable option for us. With this in mind, we are looking at the possibility of 26 round-trip plane tickets over the course of this study in addition to the cost of the treatment itself. This financial burden is only intensified by the loss of income that results from the time she and my dad are having to take off of work. Our insurance ceiling will quickly be reached in coming months.

I’m not ready or willing to lose my mom without doing everything we possibly can. Any contribution, no matter how small, would mean more to us than you could ever know. We are setting up this GoFundMe account for those of you that would like to be a part of the beautiful team fighting for my mother’s life. We will keep you posted on her treatment and progress. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

All of our love,
