7 Munro hike for Elaine
First of all thank you for taking the time to read this.
We are three sisters Kathryn, Rebecca and Ailsa, spread across two continents aiming to walk seven Munro’s in one day!
Rebecca and Ailsa are walking Ben Lawers Range, which includes 7 Munro’s of 1750 metres ascent. We have done the odd Munro (normally followed by pub lunch) but 7 in one day will certainly be a challenge! Kathryn is going to match the same distance and ascent from New Zealand. We are planning it for the 25th July, no matter the weather!
We are fundraising for our lovely Auntie Elaine. In August 2017 she was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer called uveal melanoma. On average only 40 people a year in Scotland are diagnosed with this type of cancer. The only treatment available to her at this time given the size and aggressive nature of the cancer was removal of her eye. She underwent this surgery bravely and tried her best to return to life as normal.
Devastatingly in November 2019 more cancerous lesions were found in her liver. These were inoperable and no treatment options were available in Scotland on the NHS. After trying immunotherapy and a six month early phase clinical trail, the last hope for her was chemosaturation therapy (DELCATH). This unfortunately is not available on the NHS in Scotland, however it is available privately at the Spire Hospital in South Hampton. This treatment so far has remarkable responses in treating patients with eye cancer and is available as standard in many other countries. It may be some time before this is approved in Scotland, and this is not time that Elaine has. Each treatment costs £40,000 and she needs up to 6 of them. Elaine’s family and friends have rallied together to raise enough funds for 2 treatments so far, but a lot more is needed!
She is due to have more Chemosaturation therapy in early June and so our aim is to help her get one step closer to achieving this.
After multiple scans, a significant shrinkage in the tumour size has already been seen from only 2 treatments. This has offered the family hope again.
Elaine is only 54 years old. She is a mum of three, and a much loved Nana to three beautiful grandchildren, as well as being an amazing auntie to all of us!
From the bottom of our hearts, and the whole families, we appreciate any donation you are able to give. To help her get one step closer, we will match all donations by 50%.
