Jon comes into my office an says, "Orion? I threw him off the truck after my first air!" As he pauses for a reaction. You see, he has a dry sense of humor but that's John. At first I would think, here comes Jon to give me a hard time again... but that wasn't it at all. Jon is one of those individuals who you may not realize what an impact he makes unless you truly take the time to look, but, at UPS who has the time?
Jon has always been a fighter as any UPS employee can vouch especially the ones who try to load his truck. Just recently he found out that he is facing one of his biggest battles yet. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. At first the news took its toll on him as it would any of us. Doctor appointments, countless tests, surgical procedures, and the list goes on. 2 weeks later I asked Jon to join me for what has to be his favorite meal. A coffee and chocolate donut from Dunkin Donuts. I say this because the cashier was filling his order as we walked in the door. I told him I was suprised he wasn't wearing a boy's husky in UPS shorts by now. This got the reaction I expected, a sudden pause, a few words better left unsaid, and a small grin.
As we sat and talked, one thing became apparent to me. Jon was more concerned with his son and daughter's well being. He was scared of what would happen without him being there to care for them. I would like to think that if I were in a similar situation, I would be able to respond the same. In the coming weeks I kept in touch as much as possible and realized how helpless I was when it came to Jon. What could I do besides take him a coffee and a donut and try to keep his spirits up? Thankfully I wasn't alone as his family, friends and even his customers would stay in touch and do what they could.
I started this fund to help Jon in his hour of need. Donations are in immediate need and will be used to help pay for treatment, transportation to appointments, food and housing. Any help that can be given during this difficult transition in his life will be greatly appreciated.
