Hi all... Wanted to let everybody know what’s going on with the Thayer family in Brewer. After several months of medical tests in Bangor and two very extensive days of testing at Boston Medical Center on February 19 & 20, Wayne has been diagnosed with Cardiac AL Amyloidosis. What is Amyloidosis you ask? It’s a very rare blood disease where the body creates too much of one type of protein and that extra protein looks for vital organs on which to land. Wayne’s heart is the main landing site...his heart is being affected in a way that has made the heart wall much thicker than normal, therefore keeping it from working to its full potential. The treatment: The treatment being recommended is stem cell transplant which is the best chance to put this into remission. Wayne and Vicky are in Boston currently where he will undergo one more test tomorrow to make sure his heart is strong enough to withstand SCT. As long as the results of tomorrow’s test are good, he is scheduled to begin Transplant on March 20th. That requires him to be here in Boston for 6-8 weeks for daily outpatient visits to the hospital and he also will need a 24/7 caregiver. Wayne's loving wife Vicky wishes she could be with him for every minute of treatment, but they have two adorable, wonderful children who need to see their Mom from time to time during this stressful time in our family’s life. Wayne will have his “team” here at the hospital and we’re working on putting together a “team” to look after the kiddos while I’m down here. Wayne’s sister Betty has been a huge help already, watching the kids while Wayne and Vicky were in Boston last month and while they are there now. Betty will be the main caregiver for the kids during treatment time as well. That’s a lot of information, but we need everyone to know what’s going on. Wayne will love to hear from everybody throughout treatment and even after we get back home in May. The cost of a place to stay and travel back and forth should be the last thing that Wayne and Vicky need to worry about right now. Lets do what we can to support them through our prayers and in donations of whatever amount you are able to do! Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity
