Meet Mikey

Our nephew Michael Taitano, fondly known as Mikey, is the only son of our late brother, Michael A. Taitano (Port Authority of Guam Retiree).  Mikey is 43 years old and was born with neurological disorders causing physical & mental developmental delays.  Despite his disabilities, one of his greatest accomplishments was graduating from Simon Sanchez High School with a standing ovation as he walked across the stage to receive his diploma.  That’s just who he was.  He has a huge heart and a personality like a firecracker.  He’s soft-spoken most of the time, but when he strikes up a conversation more than likely it will be about his passion for tow trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, and busses.  He can draw for hours and we’ll give you one guess what he’ll be drawing… yep, tow trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, and busses.

Mikey has had a rare skin disorder since childhood (Hidradenitis Suppurvativa, diagnosed Aug 2020).   His treatment included a biopsy with results that came back positive for cancer specifically Squamous Cell Carcinoma.  Mikey was referred to a dermatologist and is currently taking medications to treat his condition and will undergo another round of surgeries to remove more of the cancer-affected areas.  Unfortunately, the services provided by the dermatologist and the medications to include the medical supplies are not covered under his insurance. Within the past year, Mikey developed a severe infection that required a couple of surgeries, the last one just on July 22, 2021.
