Stand-Up Desks for my Students
Donation protected
My name is Paul Drake and I've been an elementary school teacher for 23 years. Currently, I teach second grade in Santa Rosa, CA, where I have spent my teaching career.
I love coming to work each day and spending my time with a wonderful group of caring, enthusiastic, hard-working kids who truly love learning and care deeply for each other.
However, we have a problem. Our student desks are old and mostly broken, the lids often coming down on my kids' fingers. Also, being old-style desks, the kids have to either sit or bend over while standing to use their desks. This is neither healthy nor conducive to producing quality work.
I want to change this situation by providing my students with Alphabetter Stand-Up desks. A parent of one of my students was able to purchase one of these desks for her child to use. The family has graciously encouraged me to have other students in my class try it out. The kids LOVE IT and when it's used by children who have greater difficulty "managing their wiggliness", the improvement in the child's ability to concentrate on his/her work is remarkable.
The desks are adjustable from 26 to 42 inches. They have an adjustable stool, which accompanies them, and a swinging footrest bar mounted under the desk. They are very well constructed and likely to last a very long time!
These desks will help my students in a couple of important ways. First, it's not right to expect seven and eight-year-old kids to spend their days struggling with an uncomfortable seat and desk. They need to move their bodies, and regardless of how much latitude I give them to do so, safety issues and issues such as interfering with other students are a constant concern. Being able to sit on the stool and use the swinging footrest or stand and use the footrest allows the kids to work and move and concentrate much better without distracting others or compromising safety by using chairs in very "creative", but unsafe ways.
Additionally, we all know that many kids are less fit than kids of previous generations. They simply sit more with their devices, etc. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the USA. The Alphabetter desk allows kids to move and stand, burning more calories, developing strength, and maintaining flexibility in the process. The new slogan states that "Sitting is the new smoking." We need to get our students up and moving in any way we can.
Your kind donations will be used to purchase these desks and stools for at least 20 lucky students if we meet the fundraising goal.
An investment in the future is a great investment, not only for these amazing kids and their families but for all of us!
Any money raised for this project will be donated to my school and desks purchased will be owned by the school district, not me personally.

Please help us. You'll make a bunch of great kids VERY happy! What's better than that?
