Dear friends!
Our beloved, Berkeley's favorite basset hound Princess Zelda got hit by a car on May 2nd on Hillegass street just outside of Willard Park. That morning I took Zelda and Pancho for a walk at the park as usual and somehow Zelda ran out on a street... I heard her cry out, as she ran towards me jumping into my arms as I lowered myself to embrace her... I saw that her left hind leg got injured and was bleeding...
Th driver immediately got out of the car and offered his help. I picked up Zelda, who was still crying, and together with Pancho we all got in the back of his car.
Don Frew, the driver, quickly took us to the Emergency Vet hospital, PETS Referal center on University ave where he spent the next four hours with us while Zelda was getting pain meds, x-rays, etc.
Turns out, Don Frew, is a figure in American Wicca and National Interfaith Representative for the Covenant of the Goddess - the world's largest religious organization for Witches. He is also UC Berkeley graduate like me, holds degree in Anthropology and Religious Studies and currently runs a Pagan library in East Bay called Adocentyn Research Library https://adocentynlibrary.org/ I am hoping to visit the place soon, it looks fascinating!
But back to our dear, sweet and loving Princess Zelda who had to spend the night at the hospital getting medical attention. Unfortunately, the fracture is complex... which means that no matter what we do, the doctor said, it might not heal. The best option in trying to save the leg, would be a surgery, if that does't work, fusion of the bones, and if that does't work, clean amputation. I asked about non-surgical option of wearing a cast, the doctor said, it would take eight weeks, high probability of infection and low probability of healing... We would have to take her to the vet at least twice per week to change her bandages, etc. The doctor said we can start with that and see how things go.
No matter what treatment option we choose, we would need several thousand dollars to complete it. We were offered to surrender her to the shelter, they would pay for her treatment, but she would be given away to someone else. We don't want to part with Zelda, she is too precious to us.
And we believe in Zelda's magic powers!
Already Zelda has manifested payments for her Emergency Room visit - very graciously Don Frew paid over $1000 of initial expenses, and the rest of the bill, another $1000 was payed by some Angel's fund after my request for credit was denied.
Zelda is a phenomenal dog! Her ability to love and be present with people is very rare. We are sure that her loving heart will attract the necessary funds of happy money to flow to wonderful people who chose helping animals as their profession.
The estimate for the surgery i was given at the hospital runs between $7000-10,000 It's very likely that Zelda would need a surgery...
Tomorrow, Monday we will be going to Zelda's regular vet to change the bandages and see how her leg is healing...
