Marcus’s Fight Against Renal Medullary Cancer

Being a mom was one of my greatest and rewarding accomplishments of my life. With unconditional love comes vulnerability and me, as a parent, have an overwhelming instinct to protect my children from harm, pain, and the difficulties of this world. Watching your child go from an exciting, energetic, music loving, creative person, that always had to be moving, to a bed ridden, worried, and sad, is beyond heart breaking.

No one, certainly not me, is prepared for news of their child being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. One that is very rare, aggressive, no cure, and life expectancy is short. On January 10, 2019, we experienced the meaning of "life can change at the drop of a hat." Just starting his life and hopes of the "American Dream", my son, 21 years old, received a diagnosis of cancer in multiple areas of his body.

Following months of visits to the ER complaining of pain (in shoulders and back), numerous tests, examinations, multiple consultations with other doctors from various hospitals, MRIs, Ultrasounds, Xrays, medical procedures (such as biopsies, spinal taps, etc), the doctors finally reached confirmation on January 24, 2019 of Stage IV Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC), a rare type of cancer that affects individuals with the sickle cell trait or sickle cell, very aggressive, difficult to treat, and is often metastatic at time of diagnosis.

Since the intial date of diagnosis, Marcus was admitted into the hospital and has experienced serious fluctations in his health (struggles with breathing, Stalpf infection, intense pain, swelling, bulging discs, Nodules, rashes, and now paralyzed from waist down) that has caused him to be moved from a hospital in Louisiana to a hospital in Texas (transported by medical personnel), and from a regular hospital room, to the IMU, and now in Medical ICU.

This diagnosis has not only been a burden physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, it is also costly. The financial obligations associated with his medical struggles and hospitalization are rising at a very rapid rate, has produced increased stress on him, as well as, my self, and I'm asking for financial help to assist with the growing medical expenses. No contribution is too big or too small. Everything helps.

Thanking you in advance!
