My name is Diana Carolina Ramirez and I have just graduated high school in an indigenous Indian community of Otavalo, Ecuador. Since I was a little girl, my dream has been to become a baker. While going to school, I've been baking cupcakes and selling them at a local coffee shop, as well as making them for private parties and events. Now I want to make this into my career. But no one in my family has ever attended college and there is no school for baking in Ecuador. I have visited the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), which has an incredible two-year baking program -- probably the best in the U.S., if not in the world. The great thing is that the program also includes business training. They've told me I can get into the program, but I must show that I have $84,000 for the tuition before I can start. Unfortunately, as a foreign student, I'm not eligible for student loans in the U.S., so I need to raise the funds on my own. With the help of People Helping People DRI and my dear friend and campaign leader Bonnie, we've already raised a portion of the money, but I need to show the total amount before entry. My hope is to start CIA in January of 2017. In the meantime, I've been fulfilling the school's requirement of getting 6 months' experience working in professional kitchens -- and I am trying to gather the rest my tuition. I hope you'll help me see my dream come true. (And, if you do, I promise to send you a dozen of my most popular oatmeal raisin cookies!) THANK YOU.
