My wife has recently just given birth to an adorable baby girl named Maddie. While this is one of our happiest times in our life, it is also one of the most challenging. My wife was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia at 24 weeks and gave birth at 26 weeks and 4 days. Maddie was born a micro preemie weighing 1 pound and 13 oz. She is making wonderful progress. During this time, I was able to use FMLA to be by her side, but I had to sacrifice my paycheck. We are expected to stay at UAB hospital for a couple of more months which is about 4 hours away from home. My wife and I can't bear the thought of going home without our baby so we have made the decision to stay by Maddie's side. I also do not feel comfortable leaving my wife alone with her blood pressure issues and recovering from an abnormal C- section. We do not like asking for help and have gone a month without doing so. Now we feel we have to give our family's pocketbook a break because they have been sucked dry travelling back and forth and bringing us what we need. If donations are received, it would go toward meals, my wife's prescriptions, bills that we are short on and anything that Maddie might need. Any money left over will be donated to other parents in the same situation as us here at the NICU when Maddie is discharged.
