My name is Samantha Reitano, I am Jacklyn Reitano's older sister. We are from a familyof eight people from Staten Island, New York. Jacklyn was born at 29 weeks with her twin brother Joseph. Unfortunately at eight months old Jackie was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Jackie is severely disabled and at the same time extremely smart. She is 18 years old and about to graduate Henry Viscardi School in Long Island- Yes an hour and a half bus ride there and back everyday. Due to our family's financial issues- having two children in college, one extremely disabled and another medically fragile- we do not have a wheelchair van for Jackie. In about 2009 we received a van that was used and from 1997. This van had many issues but it did what it had to do most of the time, get Jackie to places as normally as possible. In 2015 the van completely stopped working no matter who tried to fix it or where we brought it, it could not be fixed. After years of searching for a new van, trying to find someone to fix the old one we finally donated the van to Tunnel to Towers who said they would use the parts to help someone else. While we are very happy that we could help someone else we do need a van for Jackie. She is severely spastic but wants and DESERVES a normal life. She should be able to go to breakfast with her family, the mall with her friends, a doctor appointment, get her nails done and more without having to schedule an access a ride days in advance hoping they show up on time and do not leave her stranded. The van my parents have been looking at is the cheapest, lowest wheel chair van you can get. We do not need something fancy we just need something to give Jackie a normal 18 year olds life.
