Hello everyone. Two years ago, my Wife, Serena, discovered a lump in her pelvis area. A doctor quickly diagnosed it as a cyst and were told not to worry. It soon got bigger and she went to the ER to have it examined. It was thought to be a pelvic abscess and surgery was to be performed immediately. However, a Surgical Oncologist on duty that night stopped the surgery and said this needed another look. After numerous scans and failed biopsies, doctors were still unsure exactly what this was. All they knew was that it is very large and pressed up against multiple organs. Finally, almost a year later, the final diagnosis arrived. It is called Aggressive Angiomyxoma. An extremely rare tumor that invades soft tissue. It is a hormonal based tumor and very few cases have ever been recorded. It primarily attacks perimenopausal women. While not commonly having the ability to metastasize, it can locally infiltrate organs. Being such a rare tumor, very little is known and research is difficult. We do know that it does come back after surgery in 70% of all cases so lifetime monitoring will be crucial. A treatment plan was put in place to try and shrink it before surgery. The plan was to put her into early menopause and eliminate hormones the tumor feeds off. While it worked at first, it unfortunately has stopped working and has begun to grow again. The Surgical Oncology team has now made the decision that they need to go in now to remove it. While we don't know exactly how the surgery will go, the lead surgeon is optimistic that they can preserve organs. We do not have an exact surgery date but are told it will occur in April/May.
I have created this Gofundme to help Serena while she has this Surgery and the time needed to recover. The surgery will be in Vancouver so there is the cost of travel as well as being unable to work for quite a few months. We are also unsure what will be required once she gets home to recover. Recovery will not be easy but Serena is a very strong woman and will face this head-on.
For anyone who knows Serena, they know she always puts everyone else before her and is the first to help anyone in need. She has the biggest heart and has spent her entire life helping people and animals alike. This time, she is the one who needs the help.
Thank you kindly for reading this. Please help Serena on her journey to conquer Aggressive Angiomyxoma and get back to living the life she loves so much.
Please share if you are able. Thank you.
