“Thorn’s Quixotic Quest to Win the Fair Damsel and Live Happily Ever After.”
In case you missed it, here is a recap of Seasons One through Six:
Season One: The Pilot
Thorn and She board the same tram in Prague one morning in June. As the tram trepidates, so does Thorn. A conversation abruptly halts as She gets off at her stop before Thorn can get her name and number. But a spark has sparked. Thorn is filled with remorse that he did not jump off the tram and follow her (some would say “stalk”) because She checked all of Thorn’s boxes—artist, bright and beautiful, (almost) age-appropriate, (probably) available, and radiating joie d’ vivre. And a smile so warm and genuine that in some parts of the world, it is probably illegal.
Three days pass…Far from the tram line, serendipity serendipitously surfaces: Thorn encounters She in a post office, and post haste he gets her name and the number. She now has a name: Renata! The courtship begins. Renata is resistant: Thorn is insistent. God intervenes, telling Renata he has sent her the man she had prayed to find. Who is Thorn to argue with God? Logic and reason—those annoying tools of caution—are discarded in favor of a marriage proposal and acceptance in mid-August. The heart wants what the heart wants.
Season Two: Episode One
Renata, a Slovakian citizen residing in Prague, proudly reveals that she is Bahai’i, and wants a Bahai’i wedding. The pair travels to Piestany where Thorn deploys the charm offensive to persuade Renata’s mother to sign a mandatory document consenting to allow her daughter to marry him. Episode one ends with consent granted.
Episode Two: Back story
Bahai’i is an all-embracing faith with 8,000,000 believers worldwide dedicated to serving humanity (particularly children). The Czech Republic, where both Thorn and Renata reside, does not acknowledge Bahai’i marriages. However, if the wedding takes place in Slovakia, which recognizes the sanctity of a Bahai’i wedding, the Czech Republic must honor it.
Episodes Three, Four, Five and Six: Easy-Peasy
Documents must be provided certifying that Thorn is not a hologram, does not have wives stashed in Zanzibar, and all past criminal charges have been dismissed. Ahh! There’s the rub! Some documents can only be secured on the left-hand side of the pond for reasons that inspired Joseph Heller to write Catch 22 and Franz Kafka to write The Trial. Both of which, inexplicably, were written before Thorn is compelled to fly to NYC. The obtained documents are translated and presented to the Slovaks who are empowered to issue a marriage license, but, alas, the stamp certifying Thorn’s most recent divorce(didn't catch the dramatic prequel?) in the Czech Republic is missing a digit, and permission is declined. For real… Each episode is replete with such miscellaneous absurdities. Thorn takes a train to Ceske Budejovice for a re-do.
Season Three—and a spoiler alert!
The season finale will air on May 24th, 2:00 p.m. Central European Time at the Bahai’i Center in Bratislava. Vows will be exchanged, and Thornton Sully and Renata Hermannova will live happily ever after as man and wife!
Because that’s what we deserve! Thanks for watching!
Rather than posting a bridal registry, the bride-to-be and anxious groom are requesting donations to help defray some of the costs of the ceremony and travel expenses. We will record it and share our joy with everyone who wishes us well.
