Would you consider helping us bring hope?
Here’s our story . . .
Our family has always believed there was room for more! My husband Kyle & I have prayed that God would use our family & our home to be a place that would welcome, bless and encourage others. For a long time this was about hospitality, but about 8 years ago it became about fostering and adopting (not something we’ve shared broadly). It always seemed like God was saying wait.
Then last spring, our family, Kyle, Abbi, Mattias & I, went on a vacation and we started talking, dreaming & praying about what God specifically wanted from our family. What it would mean for our little group of 4 to be faithful. It was our kids turn to ask us if we’d thought about adding people to our family. And so, we continued to pray and seek God’s direction.
A few months later my daughter Abbi & I were in Puerto Rico on a mission trip. The theme of the week was Dream Wildly! It was a beautiful week with incredible people. Abbi & I both had our hearts stirred. While there, we began to learn about the issues on the island. Puerto Rico is a beautiful place but a very hopeless place. Unemployment is over 18%, the education system is a mess, the majority of the island is on social assistance of some kind, there are incredibly high suicide rates, and the list goes on. We saw first hand the hopelessness facing these incredible, hard working and full-hearted people.
Then our new friend Rob started sharing where hope was, especially for the young people on the island. One of the big hopes is that they are US citizens, they can come to the mainland and be in a location that offers hope for the future. But, they need a place to start, a place to acclimate and be encouraged through the huge challenges of moving. they need a home to launch them into hope.
And that was my “Ah Ha!” moment. That was when I felt God say, “This is how you can be faithful. Your family can offer a place for a young person to find hope.” And in that moment, Rob & I both knew who that was, it was for Steven. Steven is an incredibly kind hearted, fun loving, God fearing 18 year old. His life on the island has had many challenges and still he has hope in Jesus. He worked as one of our translators and all of us couldn’t help but have a soft spot for Steven, we all saw the potential in this young man.
Abbi & I came home and we asked the boys, Kyle & Mattias, to start praying with us. We’ve been praying since June and feel confident this is a God ordained plan. Steven is excited (though very nervous, because this is a huge move for him!) and has gotten all of his paperwork together for him to make the move. As everything has fallen into place, we hope to have Steven join us next month.
That’s where you come in! We would love your help in a few ways:
- would you please pray for us & with us!
- donate to this fund for airfare and set-up costs for Steven, there will be a lot of little things to help Steven get started here in California (insurance, DL, clothes, etc)
- help us build our outdoor shower structure - some of you love building, we know :)
More than anything, we know it takes a village to be faithful to God! We all take on things, but we need each other to make it! Be a part of Steven’s extended family as he arrives in this new place!!!
Thanks for reading our story!
