My name is Bill Wells, and along with my wife Molly, I'm the proud parent of four kids. Our family has been through a lot in the past week and incurred extensive costs. I'm writing to ask for your help in supporting my family by specifically supporting my son to buy a new car.
On Tuesday night, May 16, around 9pm, a speeding car, driven by a 19-year old drunk driver, careened off the road by our house. The driver first hit a power pole and there was a huge explosion about 40 feet from our bedroom. After taking down the pole, the car flipped multiple times and entered our yard.
Our yard is landscaped with river rock, which was thrown onto house, shattering our windows. Eventually the car came to rest upside down in our driveway, but not before totaling all three of my family's vehicles--my wife's van, the truck I drive to work every day, and my son's newly purchased car. It was a chaotic scene, so I first checked on my family and then I tended to the driver and his passenger, who had gotten out of the car. There were power lines strewn across our yard, shooting sparks and flames up in the air, visible from a mile away our friends said.
The 19-year old driver had a blood alcohol level of over twice the legal limit. The California Highway Patrol on-site estimated he was going upwards of 100 MPH. It's a miracle that no one was killed.
My family, especially our kids, are traumatized and have a new-found fear every time a car passes by our house. That happens multiple times an hour. We do not feel safe in our home.
Of all the things that upset me, I can't get over the idea that this 19-year old driver totaled my son's hard-earned car while driving is parents' car drunk. My son worked several odd-jobs including insulating crawl spaces, construction demo, and installing flooring to earn the money for his car.
With all the expenses coming at us, there's no way my wife and I can buy our son a new car. He had spent all his money on that car, so he doesn't really have much to work with. My son is supposed to start his new job (his first "real" job) on June 6. His birthday is on May 26. I am humbly asking any friends or family to join us in contributing to this campaign to help him buy a new car.
