Calling all Friends and Family of Mike (The Harv) and Mary Ann Harvey!!!
Mike Harvey, one of KC’s finest musician and supporter of musicians, is back from California! While that's a wonderful thing in and of itself, the reasons for his return are profoundly, well, sad. Mike was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (an immune deficiency that over time attacked healthy liver tissue). This immune deficiency has led to cirrhosis of the liver and now End Stage Liver Disease.
Mike, if you don't recall, was the owner of the beloved Tuba and the backbone of K.C. Bottoms- a seminal blues group, and often associated with The Tuba, one of those establishments that was a bedrock of the music scene in Kansas City. Other credits include producing and playing with The Cripples that featured soundtracks for The Movie Crusin' Or his affiliation with Bon Ton Soul Accordion Band, or... (S.California based) The Jack Harvey Roberts Band. Mike also opened his recording studio many times for local musicians -often times not asking for money- just wanting to lend a helping hand and encourage great music!
Due to the extreme change in Mike’s health the Harveys decided it was best to get ‘The Harve’ back to Kansas City to be near family, friends and the city that always breathed life and energy into his soul. Mike and his wife, Mary Ann, have been living in Southern California since 2010 and had established themselves in the quaint town of Seal Beach where Mary Ann and their daughter, Brooke, owned Harvey Girls Gallery (a boutique originally started in mid-town Kansas City, previously Cottonwoods & Willows in Parkville, MO est. 1986). The boutique was closed in September to allow for the move back to KC. Mike was doing what he loves most, playing drums, and making a modest living as he had done for roughly 60 years as a professional musician. Sadly, when they left SoCal for KC, MO he stopped playing those regular gigs and has not been able to pick up the sticks since. Mary Ann has devoted her time to being a full-time caretaker for Mike as his health has been on a steady decline.
This brings us to the reason for this gofundme campaign. As friends and family of this Harvey clan we have seen the financial impact this has had and we want to help relieve some of that stress so the family can focus on the time they have left with this one-of-a-kind man, Mike Harvey. They need our support in so many ways, but one thing we can do right now is to contribute to a relief fund. The Harvey’s have always been there when we needed help, or just a strong shoulder to cry on. Now they need our shoulders, and we know you guys will want to help.
You know they are not the types who ask for help, but money is an issue. Mike needs full time care and is constantly booked up with appointments and procedures which require Mary Ann’s constant attention.
Please, contribute whatever you can toward providing a little peace of mind for them in the coming months. They need to concentrate on Mike’s health and this is just a small part of what they may be dealing with. This is not something they would have dreamed of asking for, but as many of us that have dealt with devastating changes in our lives know, it will help to ease some of the worry, so we are asking for them. Please share this page with anyone you think might be interested, or better yet, add this post to your Facebook timeline to help us spread the word.
Let’s do this for a couple who have been there for many of us over and over in the past.
