Save Our Field Trips Nathan Bishop Middle School
Donation protected
Field Trips are an integral part of any middle schooler's educational experience. Many of us often forget a particular lesson or concept learned over time, but we never forget our excitement while participating with others on a field trip. The memories are of these experiences is life long. Nathan Bishop Middle School, in Providence has always attempted to provide enrichment activities for all of its diverse community. Recently, well-intentioned but potentially challenging changes to field trip funding regulations has stymied teachers efforts to raise money for field trips. New RIDE regulations prohibit schools in RI from asking families for fees related to admission to field trip sites or for payment toward transportation costs. The intention is to level the playing field in terms of access to opportunity, but the reality is that local cash-strapped school systems rarely set aside the amount of funds necessary to continue these invaluable learning opportunities.
Last year, Nathan Bishop eighth grade students took a field trip to the MFA in Boston. Many of our students had never experienced an art museum as stunning or as comprehensive as the MFA. Some students had never even been to a museum before and others had never left the state of Rhode Island!
The experience was transformative for many of our students! They were able to view the permanent exhibits as well as a temporary display of the work of Ansel Adams. We followed up our tour with a trip to Faneuil Hall and some site seeing at Quincy Market. The comportment of these deserving students was stellar. We have been invited back to the museum this January, but with the new regulations in place we are hard-pressed to replicate this trip for this years students.
If you believe in the necessity of providing enriching educational opportunities for inner city youth, please donate to our cause. No donation is too small and all help will be greatly appreciated. Your financial help will pay for the $1,575 in transportation costs and $425 in food costs. The trip is scheduled for January 15th, 2020, so our fundraising window is short. If you recall a particular middle field trip with particular fondness, then here is your chance to share that connection with a child in need.
