Hello, my name is Kyrre and this is me and my best friend Mohammed.
His family is from originally from Palestine, but they are now living in Jordan. Since the war broke out in Palestine on October 7th, 2023, Mohammed has struggled greatly with life and worries for his familiy at home. A couple of weeks ago he realized that he could not handle this anymore.
The plan was that we would both finish high school here in Tanzania and walk hand in hand during the graduation ceremony, but countless tough thoughts about what is happening in his home country lead to him not being able to be so far away from his family and home. As a result, he had no other choise but to leave after one year.
This, of course, leaves the rest of us in deep sorrow and understanding for his difficult situation. He was a passionate person who was an essential part of our incredibly close-knit community here at the school. Kown for never going anywhere without his smile. Yet this is still hardest for him. Although his family are now “Jordanian” they are still considered Palestinians, a very oppressed minority in Jordan.
He has now returned home and has two choices for schooling: Jordanian school or a school where they teach the International Baccalaureate (IB). In the Jordanian school system you get grades out of 100, and unless you get 100/100 and you come from a Jordanian family, you may not get into university at all as a Palestinian and no matter how well you do there is no chance of studying abroad. Therefore, the only realistic choice he has is to go to an IB school. He's already halfway through the IB and therefore only has one year left. With the IB diploma, his chances for further education will be infinitely better. With the IB diploma, it is highly likely (if not guaranteed) that he will get a scholarship to study at college in the US.
Unfortunately, this comes at a cost. His father runs a small shop after being expelled from his engineering job because he was Palestinian and his mother works as an English teacher in a refugee camp for Palestinians (the same refugee camp where both his mother and father grew up). In other words, the family doesn't have the money to send him to IB school. That's why he needs your help. The goal for this fundraiser is 50,000NOK(around 5'000 dollars). With this amount, he will get back to school and will get the opportunities he needs to break out of the oppressive system in Jordan.
I know that this period is the toughest he has gone through in his entire life. In terms of both uncertainty about school and what's going on in Palestine. In the year we got to spend together, we became inseparable best friends and went on countless adventures together in Tanzania. Not only is he an amazing person who is known for always smiling at everyone, he is also an academic genius who has the ability to get top grades in all IB subjects.
No matter what you can contribute, every penny will help my best friend Mohammed get one step closer to a valuable education and a life of opportunity.
