Help Aiden beat Perthes Disease

Donation protected

Aiden woke up one morning in August of 2014 with a limp.  We thought that he may have pulled a muscle or played to hard being a normal 6 year old little boy until it persisted.  We had several doctors appointments along with tests to figure out what was going on.  Everything was coming back normal until we went in for a hip x-ray.  They finaly were able to pin point the pain Aiden was feeling and why he was limping.  The x-ray showed deformittes in his right hip joint.  We were sent to U of M Mott's Childrens Hospital to see a Pediatric Orthopedic Specalist, there on December 8th we were  finaly given a diagnosis of Legg Calve Perthes Disease or LCPD.  There is not a lot of information on this disease since it is rare and it has a different outcome for each patient.  He was put in a wheelchair and was told not to bare weight on his leg at all.

On January 31st 2015 Aiden went in for his 1st surgery a Femoral Osteotemy where they cut the femur bone in half, re angled it, put a metal plate and 6 pins in, in hopes to fit better in his hip socket.  Once healed from the surgery everything seemed to be on the up end.  Aiden was healing nicely and was able to finally, after 4 long months, put some weight on his leg.  That joy did not last long as our check up showed that his Femoral head was crushing.  We went back in on August 4th to have a 2nd surgery; ligaments cut and to be double hip casted, which was his best option at the time.  While in surgery the doctors were unable to fit his femer head back in its socket therefore unable to hip cast him.  The doctors said they were unsure of the next steps to take and that they would discuss it and get back with us at our next appointment.   We left U of M very disappointed and uneasy about what was next.  After doing a lot of research  we have found a specialist in Florida who is willing to see Aiden.  He is the best in the USA they say to treat this disease and give Aiden the best possible chance to run, jump, and walk without a sever limp.  His name is Dr. Dror Paley at the Paley Institute for Limb Lengthening and Deformities.  As of right now our insurance does not cover out of state visits and the trip will get expesive as we will have to stay in the hospital for  1-2 weeks.  Dr. Paley will install a metal device on the outside of his leg held on by pins that will be drilled through his femur bone and left there for 3-4 months.  This device will alleviate pressure from his hip so that his femur head can regrow and develop somewhat rounded instead of flattened which happens with Perthes patients.  From there he will have the device removed and then have to wear a brace on his legs for more than 6 months.   We are asking for any help possible for us to get Aiden the help he needs with the best doctor possible.  Thank you for taking the time to read Aiden's story and we hope that you will keep him in your thoughts and prayers and that maybe people will become more aware of Perthes Disease.
