Wheels for Mya

Donation protected
My daughter Mya, 14, was born with a rare genetic disorder called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). The disorder causes her bones to be brittle. By the age of 5 years old, she had fractured her bones over 20 times. The doctors had determined it was too dangerous for her to be weight bearing anymore and she has been using a wheelchair ever since.

We have been using wheelchairs rented through our insurance,  but as the years have passed, these wheelchairs have gotten worse & worse.  They are not meant to be used for daily life by an active teenage girl. The brakes stop working, they are very uncomfortable and cumbersome, and I spend many hours on the phone trying to get repairs or replacements. They're just not safe for her and worsen the pain from her scoliosis.

Mya needs a wheelchair that will give her the freedom and independence she deserves.

Mya & I met a wonderful woman that has been building wheelchairs for many years. We have spent time with her talking about Mya's needs. We drove out to her facility where she measured Mya for a custom wheelchair that will suit her needs. She even got to pick out the colors she wants.

Wheelchairs are expensive, and the chair Mya needs will cost $6,000. Thanks to my dear late grandmother, a large portion of the chair is covered, but we still need to raise $2,600.

Mya is a determined, strong, kind, goal-oriented person. She is an honor roll student, plays in the advanced band for her school, President of her class, and is enrolled in college courses for this quarter. She has dreams of attending college to become a Music Teacher. Mya has been through more in her 14 years, than most adults, and she doesn't let OI or her disability hold her back.

I have been told numerous times that her smile lights up a room. Her bones may be breakable but her spirit is unbreakable. I call her "My Soldier" because she keeps fighting.

This wheelchair will not only be built to fit her like a glove, but it will be safe for her. Mya has chosen 'off road' tires so she can have more access to her high school campus, and it will have a special cushions for back support to ease her pain from scoliosis making her long days at school less painful.

I know having this wheelchair will give my daughter confidence she never knew she had.

Please help us raise the $2600 we still need to help get my amazing daughter the wheels she needs and deserves.

Any amount will help. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read our story and for your generosity.
