Help Maple Fight for Her Life
Our sweet 11-year-old cat, Maple, has been in emergency care since Saturday. She has a history of diabetes and has been on medication for over a year. Over the past few months, she’s been becoming a happier, healthier, and more outgoing cat — truly coming back to life.
But on Sunday October 26th, Maple suddenly became very weak , vomiting, and was obviously in distress. When we took her in, her blood sugar spiked dangerously high (800). Tests revealed liver and pancreatic complications as well. The vets are still working to pinpoint the exact cause, but they believe it’s related to her diabetes/medication.
We ruled out a few high risk potentials, such as cancer, but her condition remains critical. She hasn’t been eating on her own and is extremely weak, but her numbers are starting to stabilize. She’s alert at times and showing small signs of improvement — sitting up, recognizing us, and responding to our voices. The doctors have given her a 50/50 chance, and we’re doing everything we can to give her that fighting chance.
The next step may involve placing a feeding tube to help her gain strength. It’s risky in her condition, but the doctors are hopeful. They recently treated another cat around her age with a similar condition who made a full recovery after two weeks of intensive care — and that gives us hope that Maple can pull through, too.
We visited her today (Tuesday, October 28th), and seeing her sitting up and a little more engaged gave us so much comfort and encouragement. We’re talking to her, loving on her, and telling her to keep fighting.
Unfortunately, as many of you know, emergency vet care is incredibly expensive. In just two days, Maple’s medical bills have already reached $6,500, and the costs continue to rise each day. Overnight care alone is $500 per night, not including her medications, tests, and treatments.
We’ve reached a point where we have to decide if we can continue her care without additional help. We hate to ask, but we’re hoping that with your support — we can give Maple the chance she deserves. Every dollar truly helps. If you are unable to support financially, we appreciate you for taking the time to read our story, and ask for prayers for our angel kitty.
Once Maple recovers, her doctors have already discussed a long-term care plan to prevent this from happening again — including new medication and regular monitoring for her diabetes. We’re ready to do everything possible to help her live out her golden years happy and healthy.
A Little Backstory About Maple
We first met Maple years ago when she came running toward me outside. I gave her some food and called my mom to ask if we could keep her. My mom said no… but when she got home later, Maple was sitting patiently by the front door waiting for more food. My mom opened the door, and Maple ran right inside — and she’s been part of our family ever since.
She’s been with us through so much, and we can’t imagine our home without her. About a month ago, we lost her dog brother, Jack, 19 years old due to health complications.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read Maple’s story and for your love, prayers, and support. It means more to us than words can say.
