****UPDATE: 08/23/23
The type of GBS (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) Monica has is acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN). It's not Miller Fisher syndrome. The doctor is doing research for different treatments. She has two additional treatments of plasmapheresis, for a total of 7 treatments. Concerns for her difficulty in breathing led doctors to decide to move her back to ICU. Earlier today she was placed on a ventilator. Thank you all again for your donations, love, support and prayers!!
****UPDATE: 08/22/23
Today, doctors diagnosed Monica with GB Miller Fisher Syndrome. It is a rare form of a spectrum of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). It is a neurological condition that causes mild to severe muscle weakness. It is caused by an immune system reaction against certain proteins in our nerves. These nerves are important for movement, sensation, and function. At this point, she is in the worst part of her condition. Results could go three different ways - heal, stay the same, or get worse. She is still undergoing treatment to rid the body of the bad proteins and doctors are trying to help with the nerve pain. Thank you to each of you who've already donated so much! We cannot express how much love and support we have received during this very difficult time.

We need help to cover gas, hotel and meal expenses for Ben and Monica Benally. Here's why:
On August 17, Monica was taken to the hospital for intense pain in her legs and hands. The days before she struggled with pain and started experiencing numbness in her legs, feet, and hands. She was air transported to Chandler Regional Medical Center the same day. After completing blood work, MRIs and a spinal tap, she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which her body's immune system attacks her nerves. This disorder caused paralysis in her legs and hands. At the moment, she is currently not able to walk or lift her arms. Once doctors found the culprit they immediately started treatment to help. There is no known cure for Guillain-Barre syndrome. The current treatment she's on will help remove the bad antibodies that are damaging the nerves. She has a long recovery ahead that'll include physical rehabilitation and physical therapy.
At the moment, Ben is currently staying nights in the hospital with her. We're asking for assistance to help aid his meal expenses and possibly have a night spent in a hotel. Whatever you give will greatly help during this trying time. Thank you to all who have already helped so much!!
