Kayla is a strong, beautiful, and funny nine year old who was sadly diagnosed with Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
Kayla was active in her community doing karate, swimming, playing the violin and piano and volunteered to feed the homeless . Won school achievement awards for outstanding behavior and watching out for her classmates and is well like by her teachers and classmates.
ITP is a bleeding disorder where the immune system destroys its own platelets. Platelets are essential blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. People with ITP have a low platelet count.
Kayla’s battle with ITP began just after Christmas with several trips to emergency department ED with platelets of zero.
Eventually on the last trip to ED Kayla experienced vomiting and complications to the blood flow in her brain. She required immediate brain surgery (craniotomy) and was forced into an induced coma. Doctors had explained there was bleeding in the brain in several areas which then also led to a hemorrhagic stroke.
After 10 days in an induced coma, the effects of the stroke and bleeds damaged the left hemisphere of her brain. Currently Kayla is paralysed on the right side of her body, and is experiencing speech and cognitive difficulties.
Kayla is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation to regain her gross motor functions. Her platelet count is still unstable and requires constant monitoring.
Kayla’s mum, Kristin, and dad, Khai, are two of the kindest people you could ever meet. They both work full time.
Your donations will enable Khai to be Kayla’s full time carer during the rehabilitation period and possibly beyond, and assist in covering her medical expenses. As part of her rehabilitation process, Kayla will require regular physio, occupational therapist, speech therapist, counselling, and specialist home schooling. Additionally, modifications will need to be made to their home.
We have come together as family and friends to help raise money for Kayla. Please consider donating to help our family, who we love very much, help them stay strong, and get through this enormous battle. Every little bit will help them on their long journey. Please help Kristin and Khai get their brave little girl home.
