International Service Project

My name is Yusef Smith and I’m a senior at Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School. I have been a scholar of Sankofa since the third grade. I am the president of my school’s National Honor Society, I’m a consistent Honor Roll Student, and I am the treasurer of Sankofa’s SGA. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to participate in my school’s international service project to Gambia/Senegal, West Africa. During this trip we will be visiting the Door Of No Return, working with elementary school children, and we will help beautify the school buildings.
Past two years have been very difficult for my family and I. We were the victims of arson, despite this setback I stayed a honor roll student and got a job to support my family. In 2018, I stopped working because of my highly demanding work for my senior year that is given. Unfortunately, after three months into my senior year, I lost my brother due to gun violence. Which was another major obstacle my family and I had to endure.
Despite these two major setbacks, I would still like to join my classmates on our international service project and I’m trying to raise $2,000 to do so.
