Leveled Literacy Intervention Kit
Donation protected
I am a teacher with 12 years of experience teaching early literacy. In my last school district in Boulder, CO, I was privileged to teach a program called Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), which is the GOLD standard for effective, research-based instruction for struggling readers. Boulder Valley School District invested in 4 LLI kits for my school alone (one for readers at K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades), at a cost of about $3,000 per kit. That's right...$12,000! The students at my school were 90-95% "proficient and above" readers on state tests. LLI is the most effective, motivating reading intervention I have seen in my career. Even students I taught who had been diagnosed with dyslexia were near grade level benchmarks after 2 years of LLI!
Fast forward to my new job in Portland, where I work at a low income school with many second language learners. Only 30-40% of our students are performing at the "proficient or above" level on state reading tests. Yet I have no access to LLI kits in the Portland school district, and my classroom budget is $100 for the year. That's right...$100! Teachers buy supplies for their students all the time, even though we don't make a lot of money, but an LLI kit is too expensive for me to fund alone. That's why I need your help! If your kids are at a more affluent school, where 100% of the kids are not on free and reduced lunch like at my school, PLEASE donate! I need help to buy this kit. I want to give these kids the best intervention possible. Literacy opens doors to possibility! Please help me to help my students.
