My name is Martie Phillips. Colt Dickerson has been a long time friend of our family since he and our daughter were in 2nd grade together. Colt is an amazing husband and father to his wife, Elle, and 11-month-old daughter, Brynlee as well as a trusted friend to so many.
In February of this year, Colt was diagnosed with not just one, but two different cancers. His doctors first discovered a small mass on his kidney and diagnosed him with Stage 1 Renal Cell Carcinoma. Colt was very fortunate to discover this cancer early, but this was just the start of bad news to come his way. At just about the same time a small lesion developed in Colt’s mouth. His Dentist referred him to an Oral Surgeon who in turn suspected it might be cancer and immediately referred him to an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor that specializes in cancer.
Unfortunately, within a couple days of receiving the first diagnosis, Colt was told he also had Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma which was completely unrelated to his kidney cancer. As oral cancers can develop and grow much faster than kidney cancers, Doctors advised him to have surgery for the oral cancer first. On April 6th, Colt had an 8 hour surgery to remove his tumor and associated lymph nodes as well as surgery on his left forearm and thigh to help with the reconstruction and skin graft in his mouth. Colt developed complications from the first surgery and had to be rushed into emergency surgeries 2 more times, amounting to 3 surgeries in 4 days. He underwent a total of 16 hours of surgery, 11 days in the ICU, and a total of 17 days in the hospital. Pathology reports determined his oral cancer was stage 3.
Colt has been home recovering from surgery and has recently been cleared to start 6 weeks of radiation 5 days a week. Unfortunately, these treatments are an hour from home and will require a lot of commuting. He will need more recovery time after the radiation. Once that is done he gets to do it all over again to remove the tumor in his kidney later this summer…surgery, recovery, radiation/chemo and more recovery. Colt has been fortunate to be working off and on throughout this journey, and will continue to do so; but, there is no guarantee that he will be healthy enough to work full time throughout treatments or after his next surgery.
Colt is a strong and determined guy, and I know he will fight like hell to beat this cancer. But Colt and his family could use some help. We have started this GoFundMe to help Colt with unexpected expenses, medical and living expenses during this cancer battle. Any donation you can make, no matter how big or small, will help and be greatly appreciated by Colt and his family.
If you know Colt, then you know he has never met a stranger. He is one of the kindest men and would do anything for anyone. Now it’s our turn to support him and his family as he fights the battle of his life.
The Dickersons appreciate all of the support that has been given so far.
