Troop 17 NASA Student Launch Team

The Charlottesville-area Troop 17 NASA Student Launch Team is one of only a handful of middle and high school teams in the U.S. accepted into NASA’s Student Launch Initiative, a premier college-level STEM challenge conducted by NASA’s Marshall Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The team works alongside NASA engineers to develop and fly a high-powered rocket that flies to an altitude of roughly 1 mile while carrying a functional, scientific payload studying the potential energy to be harvested from vibrations caused during launch and flight. Everything - the rocket casing, motor, payload, computer hardware, and software - is designed and fashioned by the students on our team. Through Student Launch, NASA is helping to develop the next generation of rocket scientists!

Our team is also conducting an education program reaching at least 200 youth in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.

The team hopes to raise only enough to cover the cost of materials we've used to build two rockets, motors, and our education program. Families will cover their own travel to Huntsville for Flight Week in April 2023, when we test our rocket against dozens of other teams from all across the U.S.
