Help Engrave a Chapel Stone for Daniel Granberg
Donation protected
Daniel Granberg, a member of Princeton University’s undergraduate Class of 2019, tragically died of a high-altitude pulmonary embolism after climbing the summit of the Illimani Mountain in Bolivia on September 3, 2021. Originally from Montrose, Colorado, Daniel possessed a passion for the outdoors. He spent most of his brief, twenty-four years of life hiking and sharing gut-wrenchingly humorous stories about his harrowing adventures with his friends. Daniel was also a gifted tenor and a member of several vocal ensembles while at Princeton, including the Princeton University Chapel Choir.
A proud tradition at Princeton is to carve the name of a deceased University member into the stones of the interior walls of the magnificent Chapel. Daniel spent considerable time in the Chapel making music and fostering friendships within the Chapel Choir community. We, his friends from the Chapel Choir community, would like to do this to honor Daniel. The Director of the Chapel Choir during Daniel’s time at Princeton, Penna Rose, poignantly reminded her singers that the stones of the sanctuary absorb the sounds of our singing. Thus, we become an intrinsic and permanent part of that spectacular space. Carving Daniel’s name into a Chapel stone will serve as a distinguished and visible reminder of how he remains present among us in our beautiful building.
The cost of engraving a chapel stone is $10,000. We would like to raise the money before May 1, 2022, so that the stone will be ready for Princeton Reunions later that month. We are planning an unveiling of the stone at that time, when many of his friends and family will return to campus, and perhaps coordinate that with a memorial concert. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to Princeton University’s Advancement Office to cover the costs of engraving. Daniel’s family will receive any additional funds raised in excess of the engraving costs.
We appreciate contributions of any size, as they will all help get us to our goal. Thank you so very much for helping us memorialize Daniel’s legacy not only in the University Chapel, but in the lives of those who love, miss, and remember him.
