Josh's Heart Relief Fund

This is Joshua Chattley a 25 year old Philadelphia native. Recently he was diagnosed with heart failure brought on by a viral infection. Doctors say his circumstance is very rare and unfortunately the best possible solution at this time, is a heart transplant. Currently Josh's heart has an Ejection Fraction of 5% which is extremely low. His low Ejection Fraction was unable to support his body's needs, so he began to go into multi-system organ failure. What he thought only to be a cold or maybe the flu, continued to get more severe over the course of 2-3 weeks. Breathing issues slowly built up until he could only speak 1-2 words between breaths followed by frequent spouts of coughing blood. Swelling quickly accumulated in his legs almost doubling in size. Once at the hospital (Jan 13, 2019) things started to spiral from there. None of the tests showed anything positive. Dr's told us we were in a race against time. His heart was so weak if they didn't act fast he wouldn't make it. They immediately began giving him diuretics to remove the excess fluid in his lungs and extremities and a Swan-Ganz catheter for more insight on his heart failure. It wasn't long after, he was transferred to the Cardiac ICU at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in center city. We spoke to a team of heart transplant specialists, cardiologists, and ICU Dr's. They were very straightforward in keeping us updated on his current status. He was responding well to the medicine but their additional testing showed permanent heart damage. We were told that he's had a complete turn around since he's arrived to their unit. He began regaining color in his face, breathing better, laughing, becoming himself again. It was a miracle. His kidney function returned to normal, liver function returned to normal. The Dr's and nursing staff were all pretty optimistic but tried to stay on the side of caution not to get our hopes up. We were told that he might even be able to come home and take oral medication while we wait for a new heart. Jan 17th Josh was taken out of the ICU and moved to the heart failure floor. He was making progress. We heard chatter that he might be allowed to go home that weekend if everything continued in the current direction. They began titrating his medication to see if his heart would be able to continue on its own and it did. Josh is set to be discharged Jan 18th. Coming home is just the beginning of his new journey. Physical and dietary restrictions will be the new norm, yet he's ready for this life style change. Just like all of us born and raised here in this city, we're fighters, we don't give up when things get tough. We don't quit when they get tougher. We fight. We push forward. We don't let anything or anyone tell us we can't. That's in him, that's in his heart. The biggest obstacle Josh faces right now is that, he does not have insurance. Josh is an EMT and though his company has benefits, he missed open enrollment and has to wait until November 2019. Since he doesn't have insurance coverage, he is going to be faced with a significant amount of medical bills. With his new restrictions he won't be allowed to work on an ambulance anymore, until he gets a new heart. During this time Josh has been out of work and will continue to be out of work until the Dr's clear him. With being out of work any little donation will help him, in order to continue to provide for his son. Thank you all for all of the support, prayers, and kind words. It's truly a miracle that he's made such a turn around so, we beg of you all to continue to pray because it's working. We're starting this go fundme only to ask for support in this very difficult time. We will keep you all updated on his situation as time progresses.
