Dear friends old & new - I am calling in some help!

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Shameka Louise Gagnier. I have been living in the PNW for about 12 years. I have been singing all my life- I started out in the pentecostal holiness church in the central valley of california at age 3. My relationship with music and voice has always held gates of possibility open even when life is so painful and hopeless. It’s a way to hold all the complexity and intersections, it’s a way to be completely engaged and embodied when everything in life tells you to shut down. I am also a visual artist, a woodcarver. Most of my life I have felt that I needed to choose one place to direct my attention, any always felt torn between music, art, and healing. Through the process of writing this album I finally know that woodcarving and music are different entry points for the same thing! Suddenly life make so much more sense! I feel so informed by the process and enlivened to the possibilities and beauty of creating…. I get to do this!

I've been working towards recording an album for the last year, and now I want to finish it and launch my solo performance work! My hope is to raise enough money to finish the album and to get the gear I need to be able to play both solo and accompanied shows.

This is a very personal album - it's about my journey with healing and spirit, and it brings together all the music I have made through my life.  It is an offering to my ancestors, to the land around me that holds me, and to the people who will come after me.

I've had the support of some very talented friends whose work will be featured on the album:

My dear friend MaeDea (http://paintedhoney.bandcamp.com/) has come to town multiple times and helped me arrange the songs- writing piano tracks and bringing forward the heartbeat that runs through all the music.

Matt at Neanderhall Studio has been key in the backing tracks. He has patiently helped me find amazing harmonies and shape the sound.

Eli did some beatboxing in two of the tracks, which really brought the music to a place I have been craving.

Before this album is wrapped up, I hope to call in some more friends to sing and play!
