Treatment for Bower

In August 2018 Bower broke his right hind leg running around the back yard. At that time he was diagnosed with a spiral fracture and osteosarcoma, an extremely aggressive bone cancer that effects large breed dogs. We were told his knees were shot with arthritis and that he was too old to be a 3 legged dog. We were given 3-9 months left to keep Bower comfortable and happy. Within a week of diagnosis Bower was back to himself, running around on 4 legs living his best life with minimal pain medication. We have been so grateful for this time with him and he was happy and loving life. Having been in touch with our regular vet after everything, who became very confused about Bower’s case as his diagnosis did not match the way he was acting. Osteosarcoma is supposed to be a very painful cancer and most dogs would never put weight on their leg again after that diagnosis. So we were hopeful. January 3, Bower started to limp in the morning because his bad leg was acting up for the first time since he had broke it. We brought him to our regular vet to be seen this time, who took multiple X-rays, did extensive blood work and sent the X-rays to another radiologist. What we know right now is that whatever is wrong, it has not spread to the rest of him and his bloodwork is completely normal which is very uncommon for a cancerous tumour. Unfortunately his leg has actually re-broken again and the possible tumour has grown slightly. Our vet and her colleague are once again confused due to signs pointing towards cancer but also pointing towards a benign tumour, especially with Bower acting so normal minus the limp. The bone is too compromised for a biopsy so we have been given the option to either continue medication for pain management and wait for the cancer to possibly spread or to amputate his leg and then have it tested. We have decided to fight for Bower. This option will take away his pain (temporarily IF the cancer returns or permanently if the tumour is benign) and our vet is sure that he can live a happy life on 3 legs. We would like to ask anyone who would like to donate and has the means to please do so. Everybody who knows Bower knows how amazing he is and I know he has touched a lot of peoples hearts. Every penny counts right now to help with his current and up coming vet bills! Love Emily, Shane and our best boy Bower
