Being a basketball coach for young kids has taught me it's more than just a game. After the final buzzer, our players have another life to live. On this journey, I’ve taken on a variety of roles - coach, mentor, big brother, etc. I’ve learned the importance of empathy, to be more aware of others, you never know what someone is going through that is out of their control.
My vision as a coach has always been to see my athletes succeed in life outside of sports while using lessons learned through the sport. Lessons like teamwork, accountability, sacrifice, discipline, good sportsmanship. Sometimes, as a coach, you have to practice what you preach.
Over the last year, I’ve become the guardian for one of my players. Many advised me not to do it. That it would be too much for me. However, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing a young man, one of my players, was in need of help. I couldn’t look the other way.
This athlete, only a freshman, already has a shot at a free college scholarship. Since I became his guardian, providing him the consistent safety and the support of know where he will sleep at night, where his next meal will come from, his improvement has been nothing short of astounding. He has gone from an unranked player to one of the top prospects in the country however, to go further, he cannot do this alone.
Raising a budding athlete at this level takes resources that are not available to him. Costs such as athlete level nutrition, clothing, travel costs for games and league fees add up, even for a relatively inexpensive sport like basketball. We are seeking donations to help with these very costs. He is getting ready for the upcoming travel season which will include taking two trips for out of state tournaments. These tournaments will position him on the national stage and will be critical to his continued development.
Join me in helping him take a different path than he would have otherwise. We, as a community, can make a difference in this young man's life and, by doing so, break the cycle that so many kids find themselves in. Together we can help this young man achieve things he had no idea would be possible.
