Calais Light

Calais Light helps ordinary people travel to Calais to help the c1500 refugees, living rough in N France in appalling conditions. Well, why wouldn't we?  They are people just like us & desperately need our assistance & kindness. But people here feel nervous about going to Calais & assisting refugees alone.

That's why I founded Calais Light 2.5 years ago.
Our volunteer car-sharing convoy is on its 13th trip now. We find volunteers here &  organise weekend convoy trips regularly from Brentwood in Essex to Calais, taking around 40+ people each time  to work with the 3 main grassroots refugee charities there: Help Refugees UK, Refugee Community Kitchen & Care4Calais.

We are like a mini travel service. We're tiny but we book everything & arrange everything for our volunteers: ferries, hostel accomodation, car sharing, drivers, meals out, charity admin, free secure parking in the UK. We do it cheaply - cheaper than they could do themselves.  So it's easy for them to say yes!  And they do! We're a great, ever-changing team!

Our charity group mantra is "We take manpower & money - not stuff".  So.... Money is needed for our running costs, to subsidise 10% of each group where necessary so that students & less financially able can come. Any balance over our operating costs - we always aim to donate to the 3 charities & respond to their constant emergency appeals: new boots, underwear, trainers, tents, jeans. They have 'needs lists' which we try to help with. We also take funds in cash & buy whatever urgent ingredients or supplies our charities need while we are there - because life is tough & sometimes they run short & our mission is to help them keep going!!

Right now we are raising £3,000 to raise money to help our Charity Group operate, organize & arrange for our volunteers from around the UK to feed and care for destitute refugees in Calais. We also use this money to support the charities in the ways we've described above.

Our 13th trip to Calais will be on the 22-24 Nov, 2019.  CL 14 will be 31st Jan - Feb 2, 2020.
We return to help the refugees stranded there, volunteering with the 3 amazing humanitarian charities based there. We'll  offer aid, food, clothes, compassion, warmth, laughter & normal conversations to the refugees living rough in open fields in shocking, desperate conditions. They have only what they can carry, no water, no toilets, little medical care. There's an almost daily round of police evictions/confiscation of all possessions at the informal refugee settlements. People have lost everything & they badly need shelter, food, clothing, wifi, toiletries now.

So please, even if you can't go yourself & physically help us - Please, please  donate now & help us continue taking volunteers over - the charities need them so badly to do their work.  We ask you also to help fund the items & supplies the Calais refugees need while they wait for a solution & safe passage.
