Calais Light

We need to smash £10,000 to meet our NEW MISSION!

JOIN US IN OUR PASSION - giving help, hope and dignity to refugees

The desperate situation in Afghanistan has magnified what we, at Calais Light, have always believed - that refugees are people, like us, who need help, kindness and our support because of the terror and trauma they have experienced, leaving everything to seek safety elsewhere. We've seen with our own eyes how terrifying easily & suddenly normal people can become refugees - jumping from planes, terrorised by bullets, hiding from reprisals. We need to reach out powerfully to the refugees who seek sanctuary here - understanding & supplying their needs!

Pre-Covid our mission was to help 'ordinary people' travel to Calais to support desperate refugees, living rough in N. France in appalling conditions.  Why do we run convoys?   With all the will in the world, it can be daunting trying to get to Calais & help refugees all by yourself - getting to France, knowing where to find the refugees, speaking French, uncertainty about booking accommodation. It’s often easier to forget about it.

That's why I founded Calais Light in Jan 2016. We are a regular car-sharing convoy that takes ordinary people (c. 50 each time) from the UK to Calais to volunteer with the 3, main, grassroots refugee charities there : Care4Calais , Refugee Community Kitchen & Choose Love (Collective Aid).  We go every 3 months -  just for the weekend and are back in the UK by Sunday evening.  We are like a mini travel service. We're tiny but we book everything for our volunteers: c£90 for ferries, hostel accommodation, car sharing, petrol, drivers, meals out together, charity admin, free secure parking in the UK. We do it cheaply - cheaper than they could do themselves. We subsidise 10% of each group where necessary so that students & the less financially able can come.

So it's easy for everyone to say yes!  And they do! We have shed loads of fun & work extremely hard. We're a family, an ever-changing & caring team!   Our charity group mantra is "We take manpower & money - not stuff.

Then the pandemic hit!   Unable to travel to Calais we refocused our aims with a NEW MISSION -

1. Raising money for Calais Light via OUR networks, through group & personal activities, ALL OF WHICH we donate to & share between our 3 partner refugee charities who remain a VITAL LIFELINE FOR refugees in the UK & in France. We don't hoard cash!

2. We've launched our own initiative, #courtcommerce, creating links with major companies & brands to provide brand new rather than second-hand clothes, goods & products to help refugees here: trainers, clothes, toiletries - giving dignity back to the lives of people who have lost their possessions, their lives, their families, and their homes.

So .... money is needed to run Calais Light & to help us be effective & honour the lives & mental wellbeing of refugees.  Please donate to us now & help us raise £10,000 - even a fiver will help!

OUR POLICY

We have a NO-HOARDING POLICY on cash. Everything we get above a minimum operating balance goes straight to help refugees in one of the ways described above!  We aim to donate regularly to the 3 charities & respond to their emergency appeals.  With Covid, life is even tougher for these awesome charity groups & our aim is to help them keep going!!

Our next trip to Calais will be as soon as the vaccine allows & government quarantine lift. We must wait for now.  We will return to help the refugees stranded there, volunteering with the 3 amazing humanitarian charities based there. We'll help offer aid, food, clothes, compassion, warmth, laughter & normal conversations to the refugees who continue to live rough, drenched, frozen, in open fields in shocking, desperate conditions. They have only what they can carry, no water, no toilets, little medical care. There's an almost daily round of police evictions/confiscation of all possessions at the informal refugee settlements. People have lost everything & they badly need shelter, food, clothing, wifi, toiletries now.

So, until then, please, please  donate now & help us  to help fund the new work we do until refugees are offered a solution, safe passage, & humane & kindly treatment once they reach our shores.
