I'm Nicholas, Phil's step son for almost 21 years. Since Phil and my mom got together he has done everything and more to provide for us and keep a roof over our heads. We never lived in our own house or purchased new vehicles, we lived simply and had what we needed to get by.
Phil worked 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, sometimes 6 just to make ends meet. Phil drove Taxi's for the last 21 years and relied heavily on tips from his customers for his income. Even after an exhausting 12 hour day sometimes Phil would only leave with 40-60 dollars profit during the slow season.
We weren't a family that asked for help if we absolutely didn't need it and even during times of uncertainty we sometimes went without because we knew eventually it would work out. At the end of day we made the best with what we had and were thankful for everything that Phil did for us.
On October 5th, 2015 Phil left us to be in a better place. A week prior, Phil had been battling an infection with sypmtoms that made his legs swell and had a very bad cough. Upon further examination doctors determined that Phil had developed cancer and other medical issues. By then it was too late for them to do anything, we tried everything but nothing would work.
Over the years Phil always provided and gave what he could, he was an honest and hardworking individual. He was a handyman and always knew how something needed to be fixed or at least why it was broken.
Phil was smart, funny, and being a cab driver developed a great sense of humor and amazing social skills. Shifts began at 4AM everyday, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. He'd watch the sunrise and see the way the city came alive during the morning blitz, lunch hour, and finally that five o'clock rush.
If Phil isn't the definition of a hard worker, we'll have to update it today.
So now we've come to a point where we have to do as many must and lay him to rest. I know now he is up there and the meter is still running with Phil and his whit and humour keeping the passengers entertained. I come to you asking for help towards his final services, the amount we need is $800.00 dollars and we'll be able to afford the bare minimum and have him cremated.
If we can surpass the threshold and reach $2260.00 we would be able to have a service for him where people can pay their final respects to him and find the closure they need. Through Phil's work his co-workers were able to get $1400.00 together which isn't included in the amounts of above.
Phil always provided for us as a family and I feel it is our obligation to finish off the final chapter of his life. This would mean so much to us if we were able to do the services as soon as possible.
Many families have experienced the difficulties that come along with the death of a loved one. We would be so thankful to each and every one of you for your contributions towards finally laying our loved one to rest.
Much love and thank you for reading.
