My brother Alexander suffered from mental illness. He has been in and out of hospitals for a few years. Early this morning, officers showed up at my Mom's house to inform her he was killed by a motorist on the turnpike. He was driving an electric scooter in the left lane, and struck around 2:30 in the morning. He died on impact.
We knew he was in another mental hospital just before this, but would not speak to us, and we were given no information by staff. We were happy to know he was alive and somewhere safe, because no one has heard from or seen him in almost a year. The hospital was hope for us, maybe this time would work. Apparently he was released from this hospital last week. Him riding an electric scooter on the highway speaks to how sick he was.
My family and I are in shock, it isn't processing. We have been dealing with his mental illness for years, but my brother was so much more than that. He was very intelligent and hard-working. He set his mind to something and would excel in everything he tried. He amazed all of us. We would like to give him a proper memorial service, and be able to see him one last time, finally at peace.
I know we're all on hard times right now, and anything anyone can give is more appreciated than you know
