Our community has suffered a heartbreaking loss. It is with tremendous sadness that we say goodbye to Aaron (“A.L.”) Lancaster, who passed away on Saturday, March 13, at the young age of 48 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Aaron was unequivocally one of the greats in this world in every way -- a great husband, father, son, friend, teammate, principal, community leader, and all-around human being.
It’s challenging to do justice to such a widely loved leader and member of our Darlington community and beyond. Many knew and admired Aaron as our Darlington High School principal, and others fondly reflect on his outstanding performance as a four-sport athlete at DHS, or on the basketball court as a Platteville Pioneer. Aaron took on his cancer battle much the way he took on rivals throughout his athletic legacy -- with fierce determination and unrelenting strength and positivity. His family has been a valuable part of his team, with his loving wife of 21 years, Denise, choosing to put her next career plans on hold after being laid off due to COVID-19 so she could be with him at every step of his battle with cancer, along with their sons, Carter, Cannon, and Coby.
The road ahead for Denise and her sons is an immeasurably difficult one, with the added financial burden of soon losing their insurance benefits that were previously provided through Aaron. While the Lancaster family now faces their journey without Aaron, we do not want them to face it alone. We are reaching out to ask you for a helping hand for Denise and for her sons, who deserve to enjoy the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest and to pursue their goals and dreams. Aaron would have wanted nothing less for the family he loved so much.
