Ginger's Emergency Surgeries

This is my mom's story:
On Easter Sunday, we were walking our two little dogs down a quiet street in our neighborhood when a large dog rushed out of a yard and came after our little 12 pound terrier mix, Ginger. The dog was not wearing a leash or collar. The dog put his mouth around Ginger's belly and and I grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and held him with our dog in his mouth. Ginger struggled and then he locked down on her leg. The dog owners stood in their yard and watched, providing no assistance. We shouted to them for help. It was a nightmare watching our little rescue dog get her leg mauled. I could see it tearing and bleeding, so I was trying to hold her still so that she would stop struggling. It took three neighbors in addition to us to get the dog to release Ginger. By then, her leg was hanging off and we were afraid she would die of shock. We rushed home and took her straight to the emergency vet. We did not have time to get the owner's names or take photos of the dog that attacked us because Ginger's survival was our top priority. I ended up in the Emergency Room with bite and crush injuries to my hands, forearms, and left leg and foot. These ended up getting severely infected and I had to be put on IV antibiotics.
But Ginger's injuries were far worse. Both bones in her lower leg were snapped and a chunk of flesh was torn off her leg. She had emergency surgery to put a plate in her leg with 9 screws. She also has a large open wound on her leg where the flesh is gone. She goes to the vet almost every day to get her bandages changed and have the wounds looked at. At the moment, there is no flesh over the bottom screw, so she will probably need another surgery to remove the plate and screws once the bones have healed. So far, we have paid over $10,000 in vet bills and will have to pay at least another $5,000 for the follow up surgery and care.
Ginger is a rescue from the SPCA. She had spent the first year of her life in a box. When we got her, she weighed 4 pounds, just skin and bones. Now she weighs 12 pounds and, until Easter Sunday had a carefree life. She had learned from our other dog how to be a dog. She had never even seen grass when we got her. She had been horribly abused and starved and we are devastated that she is having to suffer once again in her little life. She is the sweetest and most loving little soul despite her trauma. It is heart breaking to see her suffer again. She deserves peace and happiness. We are doing our best to provide her with the best veterinary care we can get and keep her as comfortable as possible.
Unfortunately, while we were at the emergency vet and ER for me, the people who own the dog took it away and took down their Beware of Dog signs. They also locked their gate so that the police and animal control officers cannot get on the property. We are having a difficult time locating the witnesses and it looks as though we will not be able to recover any of the expenses we incurred from the dog owners. That is why we are asking for your help. With our credit cards totally maxed out, it would be immensely helpful to receive financial support before Ginger's next surgery which will happen in the next few weeks.
