My name is Emily and I'm Sarah's younger sister. Sarah unfortunately suffered a large hemorrhagic stroke on February 10. The stroke occurred on the right side of her brain in the basal ganglia, ultimately affecting the left side of her body. Sarah spent 18 days in the hospital, 9 of those in the ICU. She spent most of that time sedated due to the increased risk of swelling that could have potentially required additional surgery. Fortunately, no other surgery was required to manage the stroke. During her hospitalization, she also attempted to exit her bed without assistance and fell, fracturing her nose. She underwent surgery to repair the fracture.
She was then able to discharge to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab on February 28 to really begin her rehab journey with physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Sarah has deficits including weakness in her left arm and leg, impaired balance, decreased sensation on her left side, inattention to the left side of her world, difficulty completing most daily tasks, and difficulty with standing, transferring, and walking. She is making good progress in rehab, but does have a long road ahead of her.
As we all know, the cost of medical intervention and treatment associated with an event like this is incredible. Sarah would benefit from support to help cover the cost of care received so far, as well as future care (i.e., additional therapy, caregiver support, transportation, etc.) that may be required once discharged from rehab. Any and all support is appreciated. Thank you!
UPDATE 3/19:
We cannot thank you all enough for the generous support received thus far! Sarah continues to make tremendous progress every day while at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. She is demonstrating improved movement and strength in her left arm. She is also able to transfer and walk without a cane and with less assistance from her therapists. After a few more therapy sessions and additional family training, Sarah is hopeful to return home with assistance from Mom and Dad (Mike and Jill Ramel). Once she's home, she will continue with outpatient therapy at a satellite Shirley Ryan Clinic. Your continued support and encouragement are greatly appreciated!
