Meet Boris, a 2 year old, active boy. After he complained of pain in his side, an ultrasound found a tumor on his liver. A biopsy confirmed that he has liver cancer (hepatoblastoma) and the cancer has metastasized a bit to his lung.
Over the past few months, Boris has had surgeries and 7 courses of chemotherapy, and while this helped improve part of his illness, the doctors confirmed that to fully cure him he will need a liver transplant.
His father, Alex, is a match, and he will donate part of his liver, which will be carefully removed and transplanted into his son, Boris. This double operation is complex, but luckily there is a clinic in Ukraine with a doctor who specializes in this. Unfortunately, this clinic is not part of the public health system in Ukraine and the cost of the surgery must be paid for by Alex and his family.
The surgery will take place later in July 2021 and will cost $80,000. Alex already has saved about half for the surgery and is looking to raise an additional $40k. The doctors think that the outlook for Boris will be good but there's still a long road ahead.
This fundraiser is being organized by Rob Bernabé, the founder of OpsLogic, where Alex does work as a DevOps engineer. The reason the fundraiser is at $25k is that Alex is also running a parallel fundraiser in Ukraine (https://saveboris.org) if you are located in Ukraine and prefer to donate there.
Any help is appreciated!
